The technology inside Sea One
Among the feasible desalination methodologies, Luise identified electro-dialysis as the best solution to the needs listed above. This opened a new path in the sector for small units, taking the company to a position of leadership at international level.
The ionic transport process by means of a current field, is able to remove any substance with an electrical charge from the water. All types of dissolved salts have shown themselves to be affected by this treatment. This is true even for some forms of arsenic ions, which are present in intolerable amounts in the water of several areas of the world – water which, otherwise, would have been potentially usable for humans and animals. During the feasibility studies, the production capacity of each unit using the process defined above was seen to be on a variable scale which went from approximately 120 to 600 litres of fresh water produced for each hour of operation.
The process basically uses membrane filters.
These are at the heart of the system and the transformation of salt water into fresh water depends on the preservation of their function. The production technology of these membranes in their present state, allows them to maintain useful life for a several year duration of continual functioning, without the need for substitutions. The entire desalination process at the base of our SEA ONE unit, which hinges on the installation of special ion-selective membranes, also allows for notable energy savings with respect to other conventional systems.

In a more in-depth analysis, the following advantages can be identified thanks to the use of the SEA ONE desalination unit:
- the silt density index (SDI) in the supply water for this system is 12 (in comparison, that of reverse osmosis is 3). To reach this level, a sophisticated pre-treatment chain is not necessary, nor is the addition of chemical elements
- the membranes for the desalination unit cannot be attacked by bacteria or influenced by high temperature. As a result, the machine can be easily transported and stored
- the life of a desalination membrane is approximately 7 to 10 years, and it can be cleaned by hand
- an essential precaution for the proper functioning and maintenance of the membranes is to keep them constantly damp
- the membranes can be easily regenerated using acid solutions
- in the desalination machine, water flows by lapping the surface of the membranes, therefore a very low pressure is required (approximately 0.6 bar) along with limited energy consumption (approximately 2-2.5 Kwh).
Desalination machine Sea One: why is innovative
“SEA ONE” is a much more innovative product with respect to traditional desalination done using reverse osmosis. Conceived as a completely different and very advanced technology, the system, described below, is the result of studies and research done by Luise over the last few years in the field of seawater and brackish water desalination. Its aim is to satisfy the following principal user needs:
- the production of fresh water for human use, irrigation, animals, food, starting from water that is extremely salty or brackish, coming from the sea or from wells
- operational reliability for long periods without the need for maintenance by expert personnel
- the use of electrical energy from the civil grid or from renewable sources as the sole source of power supply
- costs reduced to the essential with an average consumption of approximately 2 – 2.5 Kwh.
